Data Repository

A comprehensive repository of Helios 1 and 2 mission data.

This page is a user-friendly way of navigating through the content of the entire archive, with downloadable links to the various data products, documents, and other relevant information. The information is organized by categories (experiments, data, documentation, etc.) with brief descriptions of each file along with their creation dates, files sizes and types.

Action Item List.pdf
This document, created by Chadi Salem (SSL/UC Berkeley), is a list of action items for the Helios data archive project. It serves as a fantastic overview of the progress that has been made in aggregating, analyzing, evaluating, documenting and archiving the available Helios 1 and 2 in-situ data.

Data

This section breaks up the data by spacecraft. Both Helios 1 and Helios 2 contain 4 sub-directories named average, peak, vdiff and sn for corresponding data. The data in these sub- directories are organized in to different sub-directories according to the year and the month of the data. Each sub-directory contains all available data for a 3-month interval and is named ayymm-mm for Helios-1 and byymm-mm for Helios-2. where yy is year of the century and mm-mm is one of the following: 01-03 for January through March, 04-06 for April through June, 07-09 for July through September, 10-12 for October through December.

All Other Experiments (E5B - E8, and E10)

We do not have any data on this site for E5B, E5C, E6, E7, or E8. As we find and obtain the available files (data & documentation), they will be uploaded and documented on the respective experiment's page.

TitleDescription/AbstractDateSizeType
Raumfahrtsforschung E5B Electric Field Experiment (English)Original instrument paper for experiment E5b, written in English.
E5b is designed to measure electric fields in the frequency range of 0 to 200 kHz with high frequency resolution. It comprises three tunable plasma wave receivers, a fixed tuned (wide band) receiver, and a waveform sampler. These components are describes in details and block diagrams are presented. Finally the experiment operations and individual commands are discussed.
19751.8MPDF
Raumfahrtsforschung E5C Radio Astronomy Experiment (English)Original instrument paper for experiment E5C, written in English.
The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center radio astronomy experiment, E5C, has sixteen observing frequencies over the range of 26.5 to 3000 kHz. The antenna consists of two extendible 15-m booms, forming an electric dipole, two high-impedance preamplifiers located at the root of the booms, and the 16-channel radiometer. Important informations about propagation conditions, such as absorption, scattering and refraction, are expected from observations of radio emission regionsat distances between 1 and 0.3 AU.
19752.0MPDF
Raumfahrtsforschung E6 Cosmic-Ray Particles (German)Original instrument paper for experiment E6, written in German.
The University of Kiel Experiment on board the solar probe HEL/OS (Experiment No. 6) measures high energy charged cosmic ray particles of solar, planetary and galactic origin in interplanetary space. Within the Earth orbit the interplanetary space will be investigated down to distances of 0.3 AU from the Sun.
19754.3MPDF
Raumfahrtsforschung E7 Cosmic Ray Instrument (English)Original instrument paper for experiment E7, written in English.
This paper describes the design and performance of a cosmicray particle experiment, E7. Both sets of missions use several solid-state detector telescopes to measure protons from ~ 100 KeV to ~ 800 MeV per nucleon. Additionally, E7 includes a proportional counter to monitor the solar X-ray activity.
19752.0MPDF
Raumfahrtsforschung E8 Low Energy Electron and Proton Detector (German)Original instrument paper for experiment E8, written in German.
The purpose of E8 is to investigate the origin of low-energy electrons and protons and their distribution mechanism. E8 is comprised of three separate units: the magneto-spectrometer, the analog electronics unit, and the digital electronics unit. The design is described in detail and first flight results are presented.
19753.3MPDF
Raumfahrtsforschung E10 Micrometeroid (Dust) Detector and Analyzer (German)Original instrument paper for experiment E10, written in German.
The micrometeoroid experiment aims to measure mass, speed, direction, chemical composition, and charge of cosmic dust particles. They are detected by the plasma produced upon impact on a solid target. The mounting of the experiment sensors to the spacecraft is shown. The measuring principle of the experiment is explained by discussing the schematic cross section of its sensors. Special attention is given to the interpretation of the quantities measured, which is needed to derive the informations on the micrometeoroids mentioned above. Also the sensitivity range of the experiment is shown.

Helios Cologne Mini-Workshop 2016

A Mini-Workshop was held at Cologne University in June of 2016 to discuss the 1970's Helios space missions. At this workshop a lot of important, previously unavailable, information was presented and discussed. The following talks/presentations were collected from the mini-workshop by Lex Wennmacher.

Dissipation Model for Solar Wind Turbulence
at Electron Scales
Under the assumption of critically balanced turbulence and KAW damping:
Good agreement of model and observations at electron scales, KAW damping leads to ’quasi’ exponentially shaped dissipation range, Dissipation length is related to the electron gyroradius, Dissipation length is independent of the energy cascade rate.

Lex WennmacherHelios Spice kernels
The need for precise and continous Helios 1 & 2 orbit data arose in 2010
No high prescision orbit information, for the Helios spacecrafts, is available
Low-precision daily position information for Helios 1 and 2, is available from (NSSDC)
I then started a small project to reconstruct the Helios 1 & 2 orbits from this information
As format of the resulting product I chose Spice SPK kernels
